University laying off staff from COVID-19 testing sites

Date

Boston University is planning to lay off employees hired during the pandemic to staff the campus’ COVID-19 testing sites over the past 20 months.BU reported the layoffs of up to 175 people to the state last week, with an employment end date of May 31. “These employees demonstrated tremendous dedication over a critical period of time for the University, and BU’s Human Resources team is supporting re-employment efforts to help those interested find roles at BU,” university spokesperson Colin Riley said. Riley said that more than 90% of the employees indicated an interest in staying with the university and that 11 of the employees have so far transferred to another job on campus. Ten others have taken jobs elsewhere, he said. “We expect many more will transition to another job at BU by May 31,” said Riley. The move comes amid a local and national rise in coronavirus cases. The City of Boston said Tuesday morning that the city is averaging 211 new positive cases per day as of Apr. 8 and the community positivity rate is now 5.7%.
