A big surprise – times four – for a Taunton, Massachusetts, woman during a routine doctor’s appointment earlier this year. Ashley Ness learned just before Valentine’s Day that she was pregnant. “I said, ‘What?’ She goes, ‘You’re having a baby,’” Ness said. A surprise baby is one thing — but nothing could have prepared Ness for the news she’d learn at an ultrasound two weeks later.“(The ultrasound tech) starts looking, and she says, ‘Honey you’re having four babies,’ I said, ‘I’m sorry, what?” Ness said. Ness’s naturally conceived quadruplets are about one in 1 million.“I need to get a passenger van. I need to put an addition on the home. Like, there is just so much that I was like, initially, uh, I need to do a lot,” she said.Ness and her boyfriend already have four kids between the two of them ranging in age 24 and the youngest is 7. Ashley’s 8-year-old daughter, Chanel, is ready to take on her big sister role. She’s already planning what to do when one of her baby siblings cry. “First I’m going to check their diaper and then see if they need a nap or if they’re hungry,” Chanel said. Now, eight years later with four healthy babies on the way, she feels lucky to be in this situation — as overwhelming as it might appear.“I feel truly blessed,” she said. Ness is 22 weeks right now and doctors plan to deliver the quads via C-section between 30 and 32 weeks. They have a due date in mid-October and will likely spend some time in the NICU. Ness said she has plenty of support from family and friends ready to help.“Everyone that truly knows me says that if anyone can handle it, it’s you,” she said. Ness’ story is even rarer because of the fact that the quadruplets are two sets of twins – a set of boys and a set of girls. The chances of that happening spontaneously is one in 70 million.
