Southern Nevada Health District commemorates National Nutrition Month and Diabetes Awareness Day, March 22

LAS VEGAS — The Southern Nevada Health District recognizes National Nutrition Month and Diabetes Awareness Day, March 22. Nutrition and healthy eating go hand-in-hand with a healthy life and are especially important for people living with prediabetes or diabetes. This year’s National Nutrition Month theme is Celebrate a World of Flavors, which embraces global cuisine and ensures everyone has a seat at the table. National Nutrition Month encourages everyone to make informed food choices and adopt healthy eating habits as they celebrate different communities and cultural heritages and explore the world one plate at a time.. Healthy recipes can also be found on the Health District’s SNAP Cooking App and more apps to help users choose healthier options are available on its Get Healthy Clark County Mobile Apps page.
Good nutrition is a must for people living with diabetes. This year, the American Diabetes Association recognizes Tuesday, March 22 as Diabetes Awareness Day. More than 37.3 million Americans have diabetes, which is the cause of more than nine serious health complications. The American Diabetes Association estimates that about 70,000 Nevadans have diabetes but don’t know it, which increases their additional health risks, and approximately 21,422 people in the state are diagnosed with the disease each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a Prediabetes Risk Test and the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Risk Assessment Test for individual to assess their personal risk and to discuss the results with their health care providers.
The Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion offers free diabetes self-management classes. Upcoming classes are scheduled for Thursday, March 17, and Thursday, March 24, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. To register, call (702) 759-1270 or email: gethealthy@snhd.org. Fill out the diabetes self-management workshop form to be put on a waiting list for future diabetes workshops. The Health District also provides additional free resources and a six-session Road to Diabetes Prevention program available online.
