Although I think that sanctioned camp sites are a viable tool to eliminate unsanctioned camping, mega camps of 150-250 people are a bad idea, (“Portland City Council votes to ban homeless camping,” Nov. 3).
Sanctioned camp sites need to be small enough to allow community to develop. Communities of about 50-100 people would be easier to manage, and many would develop self-policing mores, further reducing the burden on city services.
Even the most compassionate among us are a little NIMBY on these mega camps. Many more would be willing to live near a small, clean and orderly community of campers.
