My mother is a 99-year-old resident of Cherrywood Village Royal Anne Assisted Living in Southeast Portland. My sisters, a friend and I all visit her, trying to make sure she has a daily visitor.
In the past month or so the culmination of a very long period of city road work has concluded in adding bike lanes around the building, taking away all street parking near the facility. The administration says they were informed improvements were going to be made, which they assumed were related to changing curbs to be wheelchair friendly, but nothing was mentioned about bike lanes and street parking being reduced.
My sister received an $86 ticket as no warning was given. The small parking lot is usually full of employees and other workers and almost impossible to get a spot within a radius of several blocks. This will be really miserable as the weather turns cold and rainy. When the city was contacted, the reply was that nothing can be changed.
In the many years we have been visiting none of us has ever seen a bicyclist in the area. We sincerely hope this doesn’t discourage visits to these cherished elderly people who need to feel loved and cared for.
