Need health insurance? Colorado marketplace sign-ups end Sunday

Date

If you’re uninsured and want to change that before the end of 2021, time is running out to buy health insurance through the state-run marketplace.

The special open enrollment period, extended because of the pandemic, ends Sunday. Most people who miss the deadline will have to wait until at least Nov. 1, when the state and federal health insurance marketplaces start selling plans for 2022 (there are exceptions for people who have a significant life change, like getting married, having a baby, or losing a job).

Connect for Health Colorado, which runs the state’s marketplace under the Affordable Care Act, reports that about three-quarters of customers have a plan option with a monthly cost of $25 or less, partly due to a federal stimulus bill that extended subsidies to households with higher incomes.

People who have been unemployed at any time this year also may be eligible for plans with no premiums. The plan with the lowest monthly premiums isn’t always the best option, though, because it may come with higher out-of-pocket costs if you get sick.

About 212,000 people have bought insurance through the marketplace, which was the highest total since it opened in 2013.
