Multnomah County reports potential heat-related death in Portland

Date

Multnomah County reported Wednesday evening that at least one person appears to have died in Portland due to high temperatures this week.

The county reported the person died Monday, but did not release any additional information, adding that it could take “several weeks to months” to confirm heat was the cause.

The recent heat wave that’s hit much of the West Coast brought record-breaking temperatures to the Portland area. On Tuesday, Portland set a daily record of 102 degrees at the Portland International Airport.

Portland’s old record was 100, set in 2020. Both Eugene and Salem tied their all-time highs for the date with 102 and 103 respectively.

Multnomah County has reported that local hospital emergency departments have treated 13 people since Sunday for heat-related illness, including people working and exercising outdoors and elderly people.

And relief may not come soon as expected. Updated forecasts are now calling for continued triple-digit temperatures through the weekend. But even if temperatures drop slightly through Monday – bringing the Portland area eight straight days of 90 degrees — it would be only the fifth time that’s happened since 1938.

Four of those past heat streaks have occurred over the past 13 years.

Hours for overnight and daytime cooling centers are being extended across the Portland area as residents seek safe shelter.
