Long lines for COVID-19 testing throughout Massachusetts as case numbers rise

6,345 new confirmed cases reported Friday

Massachusetts residents waited in long lines for coronavirus testing Friday as the state continues to see a surge in new cases and Christmas approaches. Lines of cars snaked through parking lots for drive-through testing on Friday in Saugus, Chelsea and Worcester. And in Boston, people waited for 45 minutes or more in a queue for booster shots and testing outside Tufts Medical Center.Friday’s data from the Department of Public Health reported 6,345 new, confirmed cases of the virus, bringing the total to 933,908 since the pandemic began. As of Friday, 1,499 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized for treatment. Forty-five new deaths were reported Friday, bringing the state’s total to 19,406.DPH also reported Friday that 5.03 million Massachusetts residents are fully vaccinated and another 1.74 million booster doses have been administered. State and local officials are also making progress in distributing 2.1 million rapid tests. Lawrence, which received more than 76,000 of those tests, kicked off the distribution process on Friday. Salem, which also received some of the rapid test kits, announced its distribution plan on Thursday. The CDC has recommended families use at-home testing before gathering with family for the holidays.
