Massachusetts surpassed 1 million COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, state health officials reported on Tuesday. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported an additional 9,228 COVID-19 cases on Monday.The state’s seven-day positivity rate is 11.08%, an increase of nearly one-and-a-half percent in the past 24 hours, and more than six times the level reported on Nov. 1 when the positivity rate was 1.75%.The DPH also reported 63 new, confirmed COVID-19-related deaths in Massachusetts. Last week, the DPH reported 114,318 total breakthrough cases through Dec. 18.The 134,565 total breakthrough COVID-19 cases are among more than 5 million residents who are considered fully vaccinated in Massachusetts, or about 2.3% of those individuals. The state health department said 3,539 total breakthrough cases have resulted in hospitalization, an increase of 353 over the previous week.The state said 854 breakthrough cases have resulted in death based on information reported to date, an increase of 70 in the past week.The number of COVID-19 patients currently in the hospital stands at 1,636 as of Monday.The state said 509 current hospitalizations involve people with breakthrough COVID-19 cases.
