Mass. reports 4,608 new breakthrough COVID-19 cases in 4.75M vaccinated individuals

Massachusetts public health officials reported 4,608 new COVID-19 breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated individuals in the past week, data from the state’s Department of Public Health shows.A breakthrough case is when an individual tests positive for COVID-19 after they’ve been fully vaccinated against the disease.The mark is the highest one-week total reported since the state began releasing breakthrough data in early July. The 4,608 new breakthrough cases were reported to the DPH between Oct. 30 and Nov. 6.During the same seven-day period, the state reported there were at least 8,783 new COVID-19 cases among the state’s whole population.The data from the DPH shows there have been 58,807 total cases of COVID-19 in fully vaccinated individuals as of Nov. 6. Last week, the DPH reported 54,199 total breakthrough cases through Oct. 30.The 58,807 total breakthrough COVID-19 cases are among the 4.75 million residents considered fully vaccinated in Massachusetts, or about 1.2% of those individuals. The state health department said 1,940 total breakthrough cases have resulted in hospitalization, an increase of 147 over the previous week.The state said 468 breakthrough cases have resulted in death based on information reported to date, an increase of 30 in the past week.The number of COVID-19 patients currently in the hospital stands at 518 as of Tuesday.The state said 181 current hospitalizations involve people with breakthrough COVID-19 cases.
