Mass. reports 3,919 new breakthrough COVID cases in 4.54M vaccinated individuals

Massachusetts public health officials reported 3,919 new COVID-19 breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated individuals in the past week, data from the state’s Department of Public Health shows.A breakthrough case is when an individual tests positive for COVID-19 after they’ve been fully vaccinated against the disease.The 3,919 new breakthrough cases were reported to the DPH between Sept. 4 and Sept. 11. During the same seven-day period, the state reported 10,668 new COVID-19 cases among the state’s whole population. The data from the DPH shows there have been 27,777 total cases of COVID-19 in fully vaccinated individuals as of Sept. 11. Last week, the DPH reported 23,858 total breakthrough cases through Sept. 4.The 27,777 total breakthrough COVID-19 cases are among the 4.53 million residents considered fully vaccinated in Massachusetts, or about 0.61% of those individuals. The state health department said 823 breakthrough cases resulted in hospitalization, an increase of 61 over the previous week, a lower increase than we’ve seen in previous weeks. The state said 194 cases resulted in death based on information reported to date, an increase of 32 in the past week, the highest week-to-week number reported to date. Massachusetts hospitals have seen a surge in hospitalizations since the Fourth of July, with the number of COVID-19 patients jumping from a low of 80 on July 4 to just over 675 as of Monday.The seven-day average of hospitalizations has increased from a low of 85 on July 9 to the latest mark of 624.
