Massachusetts public health officials reported 13,919 new breakthrough COVID-19 cases in fully vaccinated individuals in the past week, data from the state’s Department of Public Health shows.A breakthrough case is when an individual tests positive for COVID-19 after they’ve been fully vaccinated against the disease.The mark is the highest one-week total reported since the state began releasing breakthrough data in early July, surpassing last week’s record mark of 11,431.The latest batch of new breakthrough COVID-19 cases was reported to the DPH between Dec. 11 and Dec. 18.During the same seven-day period, the state reported there were at least 32,478 new COVID-19 cases among the state’s population. The data from the DPH shows there have been 114,318 total cases of COVID-19 in fully vaccinated individuals as of Dec. 18. Last week, the DPH reported 100,399 total breakthrough cases through Dec. 11.The 114,318 total breakthrough COVID-19 cases are among more than 5 million residents who are considered fully vaccinated in Massachusetts, or about 2.3% of those individuals. The state health department said 3,186 total breakthrough cases have resulted in hospitalization, an increase of 220 over the previous week.The state said 784 breakthrough cases have resulted in death based on information reported to date, an increase of 85 in the past week.The number of COVID-19 patients currently in the hospital stands at 1,513 as of Monday.The state said 448 current hospitalizations involve people with breakthrough COVID-19 cases.
