Kapiolani Women’s Bone & Joint Clinic Celebrates Its First Anniversary

Date

The Women’s Bone & Joint Clinic at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children recently celebrated its first anniversary. The women-focused clinic provides comprehensive and specialized care to help patients regain their mobility. The medical team also supports and educates women on how to prioritize their own health.

“Throughout my career, I’ve had many female patients mention that it was much easier for them to talk to a female doctor and that they were glad to have that opportunity,” said Dr. Mariya Opanova, orthopedic surgeon at the Women’s Bone & Joint Clinic. “With our women’s-focused clinic, we’ve created an environment where women are more comfortable seeking the orthopedic help they need. Often, women do not care for themselves as much as they care for those around them.”

The clinic is led by Dr. Opanova, who specializes in hip- and knee-replacement surgery, and Dr. Ashley Aratani, an orthopedic oncologist who identifies and provides treatment options for cancerous and non-cancerous bone and soft tissue tumors. Both physicians also treat general orthopedic issues for female patients in this clinic.

Women have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Women can also experience bone and joint changes during pregnancy and menopause that may require specialized care.

“Women are more prone to certain bone and joint conditions than men,” Dr. Aratani said. “It is important to have a dedicated clinic to treat the unique needs of women. We provide resources and information to empower women to take an active role in their own health.”

Drs. Aratani and Opanova understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle to maintain bone health. Dr. Aratani played Division I college volleyball and Dr. Opanova is an avid golfer and surfer.
