Denver to require masks in all schools and child care facilities

Date

Denver’s public health officials will require face coverings in every schools and daycare facility in the city starting Wednesday, representatives from the city’s Department of Public Health and Environment said in a release.

The requirement applies to anybody age 2 or older, regardless of their vaccination status, the release said. Denver Public Schools already has a mask mandate in place, so the order now includes private schools and daycare facilities.

Students, teachers, staff members and visitors all must wear masks under the order, which will remain in effect indefinitely.

Earlier this month, Mayor Michael Hancock said all city employees, some health care workers, people who work in child care centers and services and public school staff members must get vaccinated by Sept. 30.

On Tuesday, Denver’s Public Health Director Bob McDonald underscored the need for more people to get vaccinated as well, adding that the masking requirements will give “another layer of protection for children, especially those too young to be vaccinated.

“Requiring face coverings in schools and childcare facilities will protect against the spread of the highly contagious delta variant and will help maintain in person learning this school year.”
