Rate of COVID-19 transmission increases in several Massachusetts counties, CDC data shows
Updated: 6:19 PM EDT Aug 2, 2021
In less than a week, the spread of COVID-19 has picked up speed in several Massachusetts counties, according to recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Rankings based on the week between July 25 and July 31 show that nine counties have “high” or “substantial” rates of transmission. That’s up from five counties on Tuesday. At the time, the CDC issued guidance recommending that everyone “wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.”On Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued its own updated mask guidance and advised vaccinated people who have weakened immune systems, who are at an increased risk of severe COVID-19 because of age or health conditions, or who live with anyone who is unvaccinated or at increased risk, to wear a face-covering when indoors and not in their own homes. The current CDC map shows Barnstable County and Nantucket County have high levels of community transmission. Bristol, Essex, Hampden, Middlesex, Plymouth and Worcester Counties are all in the substantial category. Dukes County was the only one to move down a step on the CDC’s map from the previous week, moving from the Substantial to Moderate rating. In Barnstable County, on Cape Cod, one known cluster was tied to Provincetown. As of Monday, Town Manager Alex Morse said that the community was “on our way to containment,” and the number of active cases among residents has decreased to 59.A total of 231 cases have been diagnosed among Provincetown residents and hundreds of other cases were linked to the cluster from elsewhere in Massachusetts and other states.
