WEDNESDAY. RHONDELLA: THANK YOU. THE FDA WILL MEET IN JUNE TO REVIEW COVID-19 VACCINES FOR CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS SIX MONTHS OLD. JENNIF:ER HERE TO ANSWER URYO QUESTIONS IS DR. VANDANA MADHAVAN, CLINICAL DIRECTOR OF DIPEATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASE AT MASS GENERAL HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING. BOTH MODERNA AND PFIZER HAVE BEEN TESTING VACCINES FOR THE YOUNGESTHI CLDREN. MODERNA SUBMITTED SIT APPLICIOATN FOR A TWO-DOSE VACCINE YESTERDAY. PFIZER SAYS IT’LL HAVE DATA SNOO ON A THREE-DOSE VACCINE. DO YOU THINK THE FDA SET THIS DATE IN JUNE SO IT COULD COMREPA BOTH VACCINES SIDE-BY-DESI >> I THINK IT IS POSSIBLE. I DON’T HAVE ANY INSIDE KNOWLEDGE, BUT REMEMBERING THAT WE WANT TO LOOK JUST NOT AT SAFETY, WHICH ISO S IMPORTANT IN VACCINES FOR CHILDREN, BUT AOLS THEIR LEVEL OF IMMUNITY WHICH IS THE LEVEL OF ANTIBODIES THESE VACCINES PRODUCE IN TRIALS. ARE THESLEE VELS HIGH ENOUGH WE THINK THEY COULD PROVIDE PROTECTION? TBU AOLS THEIR ACTUAL EFFECTIVENESS IN HOW THEY WORK IN THE REAL WORLD. WHAT IS THERE ACTULYAL FACT ON DECREASING NOT JUST INFECTION BUT WHAT REALLY MATTERS, DEEACRSING SERIOUS ILLNESS, HOSPITALIZATION,CU I ADMISSIONS, ETC.? RHONDELLA: SOME PARENTS VEHA TOLD US, IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S A LACK OF URGENCY TO GET A VACCINE AUTHORIZED FOR THIS AGE GRP.OU DO YOU THINK THAT’S TRUE? >> I THINK ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND IS THERE SHA BEEN SUCH A LOW RATE OF OVERALL VACCINATION IN CHILDREN. NATIONWIDE, I KNOW IN MASSACHUSETTS WE HAVE GREAT POCKETS OF GREAT VACCINATION RATES. AND SO, I THINK IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THE SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS DATA TO BE REALLY ROBUST, REALLY TRANSPARENT. I AM GOING TO HAVE ALL THE DATA OUT THERE TO SHOW, LOOK, THIS VACCINE IS RECOMMENDED. I THINK ONE DRIVING FACTOR IS SEEING EVEN WITH GATRE DAAT THE FIVE TO 11-YEAR-OLD VACCINATION RATES ARE LAGGING BEHIND TEENAGERS AND ADULTS. REALLY NEEDING TO KEMA SURE ALL OF THE DATA IS OUT THERE. JENNIFER: OMICRON IS THE MOST CONTAGIOUS VARIANT SR.O WE LEARNED FROM THE CDC THIS WEEK, THREE OUT OF FOUR CHILDREN IN THE U.S. HAVE BEEN INFECTED WITH COVID AT LEAST ONCE, AND THE RATE IS HIGHEST IN YOUNGER KIDS. HOW LONG WILL THAT NATALUR IMMUNITY LT? >> THAT IS THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION. I WISH I COULD SAY. REMEMBERING THAT THE LEVEL OF PROTECTION FOR NATURAL INFECTION IS GOING TO VARY FROM PERSON-TO-PERSON. IT DEPENDS ON THAT INITIAL BURDEN, HOW MUCH VIRUS SOMEONE WAS INFECTED WITH, HOWICK TH S GOT, HOW MUCH THEIR NATURAL IM NE SYSTEM IS ABLE TO MAKE ANTIBODIES THAT EAR LONG-LASTING. BUT ONE THING TO REALLY REMEMBER IS THAT FOR ANYONE WHO HAS HAD A NATURAL COVID-19 INFECTION GETTIN VACCINATED HELPS THAT IMMUNE SYSTEM SAYOH, YEAH, I HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE. LET ME MAKE LONGER-LASTING ANTIBODI.ES WE KNOW THAT PROTECTION IS EVEN MORE ROBUST. HAVING HAD ILLNESS DSOE NOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM MEAN YOU CANNOT GET THE VACCINE LATER. IT MIGHT DELAY THAT INTERVAL BUT YOU SHOULD STILL GET THE VACCINE. RHONDEA:LL GOOD REMINDER. THANK YOU SO MUCH. DR. MADHAVAN, CLINICAL DIREC
