Are you getting the most out of your health insurance policy? That Expert Show host Anna Canzano interviewed Gladys Boutwell of Insurance by Design this week. Boutwell discussed things you might not know about saving money, planning ahead and making sure you have the right coverage.

The experience insurance broker says many people don’t know about value-added benefits that come with their health insurance coverage like health coaching or gym membership discounts.

She also told Canzano when choosing a plan and a high or low deductible, you should assess your specific needs. Are you pregnant or planning to have a baby in the next couple of years? Do you have high treatment needs? On dialysis? If yes to any of these questions, going for a lower deductible may be best for you.

She suggested that if you’re typically very healthy and go to the doctor only once or twice a year, a high deductible plan may work better for you.

Canzano’s featured guest also discussed at length the advantage of Health Savings Accounts (HSA), which can help reduce taxable income, especially since you can often have set amounts deducted from your paycheck and deposited into an HSA for use on all kinds of medical out-of-pocket expenses.
