The Oregon Health Authority on Thursday reported 7,871 new cases of coronavirus, 19 deaths and a sizeable jump in hospitalizations as the omicron variant continues to move toward what experts forecast will be a peak of the surge about a week from now.

The number hospitalized with coronavirus – 1,130 – is now just short of the record the state set during this summer’s delta surge and is putting severe strain on hospitals statewide. The 7-day daily average of new cases is about 7,600, a slight decline from Wednesday, and the test positivity rate remains a lofty 23.6%.

OHA on Thursday also released its latest report on breakthrough cases. Out of 57,011 coronavirus infections identified during the week ending Jan. 22, 40,594, or 71.2%, were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people and 16,417, or 28.8%, were vaccine breakthrough cases.

To date, 2.9% of all vaccine breakthrough cases have been hospitalized and 0.7% have died. The average age of vaccinated people who have died is 81.

A 70-year-old Wallowa County woman tested positive Aug. 4 and died Dec. 15 at her residence.

A 76-year-old Multnomah County woman tested positive Jan. 18 and died Jan. 20 at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

A 62-year-old Washington County man tested positive Oct. 5 and died Nov. 22 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

A 76-year-old Clackamas County man tested positive May 20 and died Dec. 6 at his residence. The death certificate listed COVID-19 as a cause or a significant condition contributing to death.

An 83-year-old Clackamas County woman tested positive Oct. 29 and died Dec. 17 at her residence.

A 68-year-old Multnomah County man tested positive Dec. 5 and died Dec. 17 at Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center.

A 99-year-old Benton County woman tested positive Dec. 1 and died Dec. 17 at Samaritan Albany Medical Center.

An 86-year-old Clackamas County woman tested positive Dec. 3 and died Dec. 17 at her residence.

An 85-year-old Multnomah County woman tested positive Oct. 21 and died Dec. 18 at her residence.

An 87-year-old Clackamas County woman tested positive Dec. 5 and died Dec. 18 at Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center.

A 79-year-old Douglas County woman tested positive Nov. 15 and died Dec. 18 at her residence.

A 57-year-old Marion County woman tested positive Jan. 10 and died Jan. 26 at Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center.

An 83-year-old Jackson County man tested positive Jan. 25 and died Jan. 25 at Providence Medford Medical Center.

A 97-year-old Jackson County woman tested positive Jan. 25 and died Jan. 26 at Ashland Community Hospital.

A 99-year-old Jackson County man tested positive Jan. 21 and died Jan. 25 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

An 85-year-old Polk County man tested positive Jan. 15 and died Jan. 18 at Salem Hospital.

An 85-year-old Yamhill County woman died Dec. 13 at her residence. The death certificate listed COVID-19 as a cause or a significant condition contributing to death.

A 93-year-old Yamhill County woman tested positive Jan. 17 and died Jan. 26 at her residence.

A 72-year-old Multnomah County woman tested positive Jan. 16 and died Jan. 26 at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center.

Each individual who died had underlying conditions or their presence is being confirmed.

Hospitalizations: 1,130 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are hospitalized, 69 more than Wednesday. That number includes 169 in intensive care units, 14 more than Wednesday.

Vaccines: The state reported 2,416 people receiving first shots since Wednesday.

Since it began: Oregon has reported 613,221 confirmed or presumed infections and 6,067 deaths, among the lowest per capita numbers in the nation. To date, the state has reported 7,154,999 vaccine doses administered, fully vaccinating 2,820,422 people and partially vaccinating 299,660 people.
